Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
