A person who laced candy with sleeping medication and gave them to children at a summer camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight youngsters and an older person experienced illness at the facility in the summer month.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on recently.

Yet, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was involving a young boy.

The accused was kept in jail ahead of a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, detailed Ruben's offending to the court.

She explained his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a youth camp which he ran.

The man played a "candy game" with the children, the legal counsel explained, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to eat sweets "rapidly".

She stated to the judge the man had conducted this practice with the young males "over an extended period", and minors had earlier experienced illness the subsequent day.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this for many years as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had worries in recently.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "In the summer" his family member had suspicions about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to examine in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC said materials including infant oil, ointment and injection devices were found, and his family member contacted the law enforcement about his worries.

She stated Ruben went on to conduct the "candy game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"The police had not gone out by that time," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

The prosecutor said the youngsters were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the stepson contacted the police once more.

She stated Ruben then played the "treat game" in a room of five children.
